About

Unbeknownst to most, here in the United States, we're cultivating homelessness, right before our very eyes. Because this iteration of homelessness is comprised of babies, toddlers, and young kids, we don't pay it much attention. But we should, since these young 'uns are on the road to becoming homeless adults unless we intervene.

Making Bad a Little Better gives a glimpse into this world of family homelessness. For those curious about what we're missing, or for those who work with or want to work with this underserved population, this e-book will get you started on understanding more about who these kids and parents are, and what can be done to make their lives a little less bad and at least a little better. For those whose jobs center around kids experiencing homelessness, if you know little about their situations, this is a good place to start. BONUS: Readers can click on links to several short videos I've made of families sharing their stories of homelessness and what school means to them.

Much of this book is inspired by three incredible moms named Melissa. They shared their wisdom for "The Three Melissas - The Practical Guide to Surviving Family Homelessness," a unique guide designed primarily for parents who need a little insiders' guidance to get through what is likely the worst period of their parenthood.

The 3 Melissas, along with our book's co-author Diane Bowman, joined me in acknowledging that proposing solutions to homelessness was a bit excessive. We were going to name the book "Making Bad a Little Better," but that seemed a tad negative. For this e-book, however, it fits.

I start with the premise that most people know little about family homelessness, even though families in various homeless situations are everywhere. To start with, it's a definition thing that even befuddles the families themselves.

How we ended up with literally millions of families in homelessness is another topic I cover. Without delving deep into social sciences, readers will learn some of the causes.

Chances are that even those assigned the responsibility of assisting homeless students in school don't know what they need to know, so this little book covers the basics. And you get connected to resources to further help you with your challenging job.

It's always good to highlight the champions that are making bad a little better. Having seen lots of amazing homeless liaisons in action, they get a brief shoutout here. The importance of the federal McKinney-Vento Education for Homeless Children and Youth Act (EHCYA) is also explained.
