The novel tells what happened in Constantinople during and after WWI, which the characters of the novel also witnessed. During this period, the main character loses relatives and intellectuals of his nation whom he knew. He struggles against the hardships he constantly encounters, striving to overcome them without losing hope. At the same time, he attempts to understand why people are so unjust, cruel, and indifferent toward one another. The novel also depicts the tragic events that took place in Smyrna in 1922 and recounts Ernest Hemingway's days in Constantinople immediately following that horrific episode. The novel contains themes of selfless, honest friendship, a caring attitude, and beautiful romantic love.
