As their worlds collide, an ex-con and his victim struggle to make sense of their violent past and forge a new future When Victor Jenner emerges from prison he finds himself inexorably drawn to the man who put him there-the policeman he'd shot a bullet through and paralyzed for life. But it seems that David Fleetwood isn't the sort to hold a grudge, and neither is his ravishing girlfriend, Clare. But can an ex-con like Victor create a new life, or are these three newfound friends treading into the dangerous waters of the past? Showcasing her unwavering mastery of the psychological thriller, Ruth Rendell's Crime Writers' Association Macallan Gold Dagger award–winning novel peers fearlessly into the hidden recesses of a criminal mind.
"A superb work . . . a compelling psychological portrait . . . a helluva good novel."
Philadelphia Daily News
"Chillingly memorable fiction . . . Rendell is a master of her craft."
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"Rendell specializes in coolly, even morbidly, detached tales of mayhem. The O. Henry-meets-Grand Guignol twists of her most characteristic work . . . feel like they've been thought up by someone with ice water in her veins."
