She is caught between acting tough and being on the defensive. 'She's vulnerable,' says Laura Carmichael, who plays her. 'She's the disappointing daughter. And she feels that very keenly—she so wants to be loved and accepted, rather than rejected. And she throws herself into things to try and achieve that.'
