About

After a late-summer storm brushes North Carolina's Outer Banks, Pamlico Sound lies deceptively calm.

Ava North walks her twelve-year-old son Jack down the dock to Devildam. She and Jack's father, Danny, are in the final stages of separation, speaking only out of necessity. This was meant to be his day alone with Jack, but a last-minute cancellation left a seat open. Danny, reluctant to spend the day with her, asked if she wanted to come. Ava, equally unwilling, agreed for Jack's sake.

The boat is run by Cap Barton, an aging charter captain battling cancer, and his deckhand, Kid Sommers. The other passengers -Larry and Colleen Kealy, and Shel Clarke - all work with Danny at Kealy's Crab Shack. Far offshore, a great white shark tagged the day before and named Judy follows instinctive cues into storm-altered channels.

She is no monster, only the sea in motion.

While gathering bait from a nearby shoal, Kid finds a dead baby great white, mangled by a propeller. He severs the head; Danny keeps it to mount the jaws in his restaurant. The carcass drifts away, briefly inspected and dismissed by Judy.

Without warning, Devildam runs aground. Passengers and crew work to push her free but remain on the shoal. Moments later, Judy takes Colleen in a violent rush. Larry dives after her, then swims to the boat, only to collapse from a heart attack before calling for help. Cap sees Devildam riding low - she's sinking. Judy strikes again, fatally mauling Shel. With the tide rising, Cap sends Kid to the boat, using Shel's body as bait to draw Judy off. Kid reaches the deck, but his weight collapses a rotted battery rack, killing all power. Before leaving, he throws the shotgun to Cap, then rows the dinghy toward shore for help.

The tide is at their thighs when Cap and Danny try to draw Judy in for a point-blank shot. Cap slaps the water, Judy charges, and Danny, Ava, and Jack yank him back, beaching her on the shoal. Danny aims, but the soaked shells fail. Judy breaks free, tangling Jack in the rope. Cap cuts him loose and pushes him toward Ava before disappearing beneath the water, crushed between Judy's jaws.

Judy returns as the tide rises, high enough to allow her approach. Jack remembers from Shark Week that sharks avoid the scent of their own dead. Danny uses the severed head to drive her off. A Coast Guard helicopter and lifeboat arrive, guided by Kid, who made it to shore and called for help.

In the weeks after, Judy's tracker pings north until scientists quietly disable it, protecting her from those calling for her death. For Ava, Danny, and Jack, survival reshapes what was broken. Jack's nightmares fade, Danny provides support, and Ava begins to trust the quiet between them. On a gray October day, they walk the beach together - not just as co-parents and child, but as a family, tempered and bound by the water that nearly took them.
