About

This speculative fiction novel explores real world issues from four different layers of reality: the school and VR worlds (pseudo-realities), nature (reality), and a mythic reality (the most fundamental reality). Put simply, this is a book about how to survive in the modern world. The novel explores how systems shape not only behavior but perception and asks what it might mean to recover a way of seeing that is fully human.

Seventeen-year-old Jason lives in a near-future society organized around optimization. Within a system of school, behavioral metrics, and predictive technologies, individuals are guided toward the most efficient versions of themselves. At Jason's school, students participate in immersive simulations and constant performance tracking, where success is measured by how closely they align with established patterns of thought, behavior, and social interaction.

As Jason grows increasingly alienated from the institutions around him, he begins wandering beyond the structured environment of the city and into the natural world. There he encounters an older wanderer whose stories and quiet presence challenge the established narrative in Jason's mind. In moments that feel both disorienting and deeply real, Jason begins to experience a kind of meaning that cannot be measured, predicted, or explained within the system he was raised to trust.

This novel will appeal to readers of The Giver and Never Let Me Go, but it expands beyond them: where those works expose the system or humanize life within it, this novel fractures reality itself - moving across institutional, simulated, natural, and mythic layers in a search not just for freedom, but for what is real and how one might learn to see it clearly again.
