A seed falls from a plant. A mouse eats the seed. An owl eats the mouse. Each animal gets energy from its food. How does energy flow from one living thing to another? Let's investigate food chains and food webs!
"Food chains and food webs may seem interchangeable, but this entry in the Science Inquiry series (8 titles) helps students understand the distinction. To begin, the clear text, accompanied by color stock photos, asks readers to create cards featuring woodland plants and animals (e.g., berries, mouse, owl). As it first introduces the concept of food chains, including such related terms as producers, consumers, and omnivores, children can follow along, making their own food chains with their cards. From here, the text progresses to food webs, asking readers again to use their cards and notice the interconnectedness of multiple food chains. A large infographic of an ocean food web illustrates that food webs exist in all environments. Finally, this interactive life science selection closes with children considering their own place in a food web."
