Long before Leonardo da Vinci, there was Daidalos. He was one of the greatest minds of the ancient world: architect, inventor, sculptor, scientist, and engineer. His name survives in legend as the first human to fly and as the father of Ikaros, whose fatal fall became a timeless warning about ambition. But Daidalos was far more than a myth.
This book uncovers the historical figure behind the legend and presents Daidalos as the earliest known polymath, anticipating Leonardo da Vinci by nearly 3,000 years. Drawing on archaeology, classical sources, and ancient texts, it situates Daidalos within the real political and technological world of Minoan Crete, Mycenaean Greece, and the wider Mediterranean of the second millennium BCE.
Yet genius came at a cost. Daidalos was implicated in the deaths of close family members as well as demi-gods such as King Minos. He engineered both the creation and destruction of the Minotaur. His interventions shattered the lives of Queen Pasiphae and Ariadne and may have contributed to the downfall of the Minoan civilization itself. Blending history, myth, and material culture, this book explores the double-edged nature of innovation. It is a story of brilliance and unintended consequences, creativity and destruction, and the enduring dangers of technology without restraint.
