About

After her twin brother Ioan enlists in 1915, Haf trains as a Voluntary Aid Detachments nurse. Called up to a convalescent hospital in the Vale of Glamorgan, she reports to a religious Matron and is put in charge of a three-bed ward for injured ex-servicemen. On Haf's ward are a padre who was blinded and lost both his hands at the front; a private with deep chest and belly wounds who quotes Rumi; and a private who lost his lower leg, his best friend and his faith in no man's land.
When her family is floored by harrowing news from the front, a distraught Haf throws herself into her work, caring for the wounded men on her ward, each of whom must reconcile his wartime experience with his understanding of faith, belief and religion.
As the wounded men continue to convalesce under Haf's dedicated care, the relationships between all four people deepen forcing each of them to confront the hardships of war and the way their experiences have changed their lives forever.
