Matthew and Melanie had shared almost ten years of what appeared to be a perfect life. They had achieved the American dream with well-paying jobs and a new house on some land in the countryside. However, the truth was far from what it seemed. Melanie had been keeping a dark secret from Matthew, one that involved torturing him without his knowledge. When that became too mundane, Melanie sought a new form of torture, one that was blatant but surprisingly welcomed by Matthew.
Over the course of the last year and a half, Melanie began to reveal her secret life to Matthew, presenting it as a new sexual adventure. Matthew was euphoric, caught up in the moment, and blinded by his excitement. Although he recognized that he was being gaslit, he assumed it was part of the nightly game that Melanie was playing. While the diagnosis seemed to fit her actions, Matthew couldn't imagine multiple random partners being involved.
