About

1972, Transylvania - the yard of the Armenian church in Szamosújvár. This is where Gyuszi Sütő's series of events spanning 18 years, based on real experiences, starts.
The 36 chapters of the book begin with stories he experienced as a child, the author was barely 10 years old at the time. At first, we read about scavenger hunts, soccer balls, slingshots and all kinds of playground adventures, but as the years go by - and as life under Ceausescu's communist dictatorship gets harder - the themes and characters become more and more serious. Poignant narratives quickly alternate, which speak of explosions, life-and-death battles with wild animals, mountain rescues, forced labor camps, falls, persecution, torture, informers, secret police, and many forms of physical and mental abuse. Finally, we can witness the complete collapse of communism, which the author experienced as a young family man.
In the 1980s, greyness, cold, lack, oppression and hopelessness were part of everyday life in Romania. But sometimes the cooperation between people, helpfulness, humanism and the brilliant humor born from the most frustrating situations, which was essential to survive the madness, shine through.
