Cyrus L. Gray III, known professionally as Xyrus, is a Texas writer, reentry advisor, published author, entrepreneur, and powerful advocate for criminal justice reform. He survived nearly five years of wrongful pretrial incarceration in Hays County Jail, San Marcos, Texas, facing a capital murder charge for a crime he did not commit. His case, built on weak evidence and systemic bias, ultimately ended in dismissal in July 2023 after years of emotional and legal turmoil. His co-defendant, DeVonte Amerson, was also cleared in May 2025.After release, Xyrus became a reentry advisor with Mano Amiga, working to help others reintegrate after incarceration. He has spoken at government hearings, written op-eds and zines, appeared on public platforms and podcasts, and built a reputation as a creative manager, personal trainer, and inspiring speaker. Through every endeavor, he advocates for system-impacted individuals and challenges the criminal legal system's failures with bold truth and vulnerability.I Killed a Man is Xyrus's debut memoir, blending memoir, testimony, and self-help into a raw and riveting narrative of survival, spiritual awakening, and transformation. The title metaphorically reflects the versions of himself Xyrus had to "kill" in order to grow-his trauma, anger, hopelessness, and victimhood-while confronting the brutal realities of wrongful incarceration and systemic injustice. The memoir unfolds across 13 vivid chapters, covering his West African roots, youth, the arrest and abuses he faced in jail, his mental health struggles, and the internal deaths he endured to arrive at a place of healing, hope, and higher purpose. Each chapter contains powerful quotes, reflective storytelling, and descriptions that humanize a dehumanizing experience. Cyrus L.
