In this deadpan, brilliant debut novel, you will be plunged headfirst into the strange, Kafka-esque world of a women's rehab facility. Confined to the facility "for their own safety" without contact with the outside world, our twenty-two-year-old narrator and her fellow patients' only escapes are daily "meetings" (inspirational speeches from wealthy ex-alcoholics and lifestyle gurus) and visits to the doctor for blood tests or abortions.
When our narrator is discharged from rehab, turned out onto Toronto's streets without resources, a job or an apartment, and tasked with staying clean, the book asks: What next? What happens in the aftermath of your lowest low? What does rebuilding a life really look like, unvarnished?
Hey, Good Luck Out There offers a wholly original and incisive take on addiction and recovery, and introduces a dynamic new voice in fiction. Georgia Toews is at once uncompromisingly truthful, gritty and terribly funny, with a razor-sharp sense of the absurd. GEORGIA TOEWS has written for film and TV. Hey, Good Luck Out There is her first novel. Born and raised in Winnipeg, she now lives in Toronto.
