Heartbroke

In California's Central Valley, a 450-mile long stretch of America that produces a large share of the fruits the whole country consumes, a teenage sex-worker is supporting her ex-beauty queen mother in the wake of a disaster. As she comes of age and attempts to conceal her own heartache, the town changes around her, and others flourish in the sunlight or else wilt in the heat.

A religious farmer attributes his dead crops as punishment from God for his infidelities. A woman recounts the brutal disappearance of her mother after a case is, reopened. A best friend goes missing, and a desperate mother takes a baby from a shelter. These tales are, connected by a fierce devotion to the land, but they also brim over with each character's mad desire for human connection-to salvage grace and love where they can find it, and sometimes to sabotage it.
