Reading this book will disappoint anyone who expects easy teachings in the art of loving. On the contrary, the purpose of the book is to show that love is not an easy feeling for anyone, regardless of the degree of maturity reached. Its purpose is to convince the reader that all his attempts to love are doomed to failure, unless he seeks, most actively, to develop his total personality, in order to reach a productive orientation, and that satisfaction in individual love cannot be achieved without the ability to love others, without humility, courage, faith and discipline. In a culture where these qualities are rare, the ability to love must also be rare. Who does not believe it, let him ask himself how many truly loving people he has met.
But the difficulty of the enterprise should not induce one to refrain from trying to know the difficulties and the conditions of their attainment. In order to avoid unnecessary complications, I have tried to deal with the problem, to the greatest extent possible, in non-technical language.
