About

In the spring of 1898, Florida was disorganized and crowded with preparation for the impending Spanish-American War. Thousands of people are trying to get to Tampa, and the railroads are gridlocked. Charlie Herlong is determined to move from Lake City to Jacksonville, driven by the promise of adventure to "see the elephants." Each step he takes to get closer to Jacksonville leads him further away, into the chaos of small towns transformed into cities. He meets P. Henry Whitfield, a godly young man on his way to join the Buffalo soldiers. Charlie accidentally saves the lives of Montgomery Ward and his entourage and gains the favor and gratitude of railroad tycoon Henry Plant, Ward, and his daughter Marjorie. Charlie's luck is a boon to nearly everyone he meets, which benefits some and draws the ire of others. Charlie's loyalty to his friends demands that he finish one more task before joining Marjorie in New York, and his enemies are determined to stop him.
