Two 12-year-old girls simultaneously demand a change in their lives.
At this precise moment, the Angel Gabriel becomes acutely aware of their request and, in the night, visits the girls to ensure it is truly what they want. He offers them the chance to switch bodies completely – if they are still certain when they wake.
The swap takes place. Giselle, an intelligent girl living in London, exchanges her life and body and mind with Minati, an orphaned girl surviving on the streets of Northern India.
The former Minati, now living as Giselle, is overjoyed by her new family and her first boyfriend.
Meanwhile, Giselle, now living as Minati, dedicates herself to helping the orphaned children find work at the local sugar cane plantation. She also discovers unexpected, romantic feelings for Bhopa, a fellow orphan.
As Minati, living in England as Giselle, trains to fulfil her wish to become an Olympic athlete, she struggles with schoolwork and then faces a knife attack.
Meanwhile, Giselle, living in India as Minati, faces a desperate race against time to save Bhopa's life and is helped by Raj, a loyal friend – but time is fast running out.
