Success made him. The truth may destroy him.
Josh Cummiskey has it all: wealth, influence, and the reputation of a brilliant biotech CEO in Canada. But when a health-data breach at his company ignites a national scandal, Josh's world collapses overnight. Facing criminal investigation, he disappears-slipping across borders and identities in a desperate flight from the ruins of his life, and from himself.
On the run, Josh drifts through a sequence of transient encounters: truck drivers, bus passengers, bartenders, strangers whose fleeting kindness or suspicion mirrors his own confusion. Each face, each conversation unearths fragments of a fractured past-his estranged father Charles, his failed relationship with Mai, and the deep unease beneath his success. The further he travels, the more his sense of self begins to dissolve, his life becoming a kind of fugue: part escape, part forgetting, part search for meaning.
A near-fatal accident in New Mexico halts his flight. Rescued by Alo, a mysterious healer, and Ana, Alo's steadfast partner, Josh wakes to find himself immobilized, trapped between life and death, silence and revelation. Alo offers him refuge in a remote cabin in Carson National Forest. In that isolation, the rhythms of nature and the austere calm of his caretakers begin to expose the hunger beneath his ambition-a lifelong attempt to earn love through achievement and success.
As months pass, Josh learns again how to listen, how to inhabit stillness. Layers of his former self fall away, yet when a chance encounter with Stella threatens to expose him, Josh must decide whether to vanish again or confront the truth he has spent a lifetime evading.
Fugue is a taut, introspective novel about identity and the cost of ambition-a portrait of a man stripped to his core, and what remains when there is nowhere left to hide.
