Che cosa è l'estetica? La tesi di Christoph Menke è che non sono gli oggetti a costituire l'estetica. L'estetica non parte dai "dati estetici". È piuttosto l'estetica che deve porre in essere o "costituire" l'ambito degli oggetti cosiddetti "estetici". Il libro ricostruisce proprio come l'estetica abbia costituito i suoi oggetti nel XVIII secolo, nella riflessione di Baumgarten e di Kant e, soprattutto, come nel costituire i suoi oggetti abbia finito per trasformare i termini fondamentali della filosofia, inaugurando la filosofia moderna vera e propria.
