About

What happens when a massage therapist stops thinking about every movement and simply begins to work? When assessment, touch, adaptation, and attention seem to become part of the same continuous process? Most experienced therapists recognize moments like these. Time changes. Distractions quiet. Decisions seem to arrive without deliberate effort. The work feels less like a sequence of techniques and more like a conversation unfolding beneath the hands. Some call this being "in the zone." Psychology has another name for it: flow.
Flow: A Neuroscience-Informed Guide to the Flow State in Massage Therapy explores what this remarkable state may mean for the practice, learning, and longevity of massage therapy. Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, education, physiology, and research on skilled performance, Christopher Deery and Xerlan Deery examine flow without turning it into either mysticism or neurological certainty. Instead, they invite therapists to explore what science currently supports, what remains uncertain, and what their own experience at the table may have been telling them all along.
Along the way, the book explores attention, pattern recognition, implicit and explicit learning, challenge and skill, nervous system regulation, neurochemistry, brain networks, expertise, fatigue, curiosity, and the conditions that can make flow more or less likely. These ideas are brought back to the treatment room, where posture, environment, communication, clinical reasoning, observation, and skilled touch continually shape one another.
This is not a book about chasing an altered state or learning a formula for effortless practice. Flow cannot simply be switched on. It can, however, be understood, investigated, and perhaps cultivated.
For massage therapists, educators, and students, Flow offers something more useful than another collection of techniques. It asks us to become curious about the mind behind the hands, the conditions under which our best work emerges, and how thoughtful practice can gradually transform conscious effort into something quieter, more responsive, and deeply human.
