About

Né en 1822, Armand Rivière qui se proclame « fils de la Révolution » devient l'un des chefs du parti républicain en Touraine sous le Second Empire puis député et maire de Tours au début de la IIIe République. Il publie par ailleurs nombre d'ouvrages quelquefois érudits et certaines fois polémiques. Il bataille aussi notamment contre le projet de reconstruction à l'identique de la basilique Saint-Martin de Tours détruite à la suite de la Révolution. Fidèle tout au long de sa vie à ses convictions républicaines, laïques et même anticolonialistes, il ne cessera le combat que terrassé par la maladie en 1891.
