Diana Roberts is sent to live with a wealthy great uncle when she is four years old in 1885. She is educated like a princess, and when her aunt dies just before her graduation in 1899, she is forced into an arranged marriage because of the social mores of the times.
In 1915, her husband leaves her when she is pregnant for the seventh child. There are no government assistance programs in l915 for widowed or abandoned families, and it is a story of the struggle and how the family copes. Child labor is rampant, and the oldest girls who are 12 and 14 are forced to work 12 hour days, six days a week, for little money. Diana teaches them at home, becomes a midwife, teaches piano lessons, and anything she can do to keep them together. How the children try to protect their mother from the realities of their lives and Diana’s struggle to make a life for them is the main theme of the book.
