About

Western Heights never really lets you go.
EXHIBIT: A Witness from Western Heights is a raw and unflinching collection of true-life accounts from people who came of age in and around the Western Heights housing projects of Knoxville, Tennessee.
Set largely against the turbulent backdrop of the 1970s and 1980s, these interconnected stories reveal a childhood world shaped by poverty, addiction, broken homes, street violence, racism, crime, incarceration, and the constant struggle to survive. The book presents these experiences as lived memories rather than invented stories, preserving the voices and realities of those who witnessed them firsthand.
Through the stories of Terence, Markus, Jug, Peanut and Booker, Joe-Joe, Kermit, Dewane, Eli, Jamal, Lemont, Damian, Abe and Caine, Kenny, Alfred, Pee-Wee, Leo, Will, Mack, and others, readers enter a community where children were often forced to grow up long before they were ready.
Some become trapped in the same violence that surrounded them. Others fight their way toward education, careers, family, forgiveness, or a different future. One story follows a boy who once struggled with dyslexia and hardship through military service, college, and ultimately a career as a chemical engineer-showing that even within the same environment, lives can take dramatically different paths.
At its heart, EXHIBIT is not simply a collection of stories about crime or poverty. It is a portrait of survival, loyalty, childhood trauma, friendship, family, loss, resilience, and the lasting mark a neighborhood can leave on the people who grow up there.
Brutal at times, deeply personal, and told without romanticizing the streets, EXHIBIT: A Witness from Western Heights asks readers to look beyond statistics and stereotypes and listen to the people who actually lived the experience.
For readers interested in memoir, narrative nonfiction, oral history, urban American history, true-life survival stories, childhood adversity, social history, and stories of resilience.
