How World-Class Vehicles Are Built-By Teams, Culture, and Leadership
What truly makes a great car?
It is not only horsepower, software, or bold design.
The greatest vehicles are built by people-by disciplined teams, shared values, thoughtful leadership, and a relentless commitment to quality.
In Engineering the Soul and Spirit into Cars, veteran automotive engineer and global team leader Sam Shan takes readers inside the rarely seen world of vehicle creation. From the first concept sketch to mass production, and from China's historic auto town of Changchun to America's Motor City, Detroit, this book reveals how world-class vehicles are truly built.
Drawing on more than three decades of global experience across some of the most influential automotive companies in the world-including Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Porsche, and his role as CEO of NMC-Sam offers an insider's perspective on engineering excellence, product quality, and cross-cultural teamwork. Readers gain firsthand insight into the decisions, trade-offs, failures, and late-night problem-solving that separate average cars from legendary ones.
This is not a technical textbook.
And it is more than a memoir.
It is a practical, human-centered guide to engineering leadership-blending real-world case studies with personal experience. Sam shares how iconic vehicles such as the Ford Mustang achieved industry recognition for quality and emotional connection, how global teams aligned across continents, and how engineering rigor and human creativity coexist in truly great products.
Inside these pages, readers will discover:
• How vehicles evolve from concept sketches to production reality
• Why quality is designed long before the assembly line begins
• How global teams across cultures deliver world-class results
• What leaders must do when failure is not an option
• How emotion, craftsmanship, and data come together in great cars
• Lessons from EV development, digital engineering, and future mobility
Sam also reflects on his personal journey-immigrating to the United States with determination, building a career in Detroit, mentoring young engineers, contributing to global technical exchanges, and giving back to engineering and Chinese-American communities. His story mirrors the evolution of the modern automotive industry itself: global, diverse, complex, and driven by people.
Written with clarity, honesty, and passion, Engineering the Soul and Spirit into Cars speaks to:
• Engineers and engineering leaders
• Automotive professionals and students
• Entrepreneurs, product developers, and innovators
• Anyone who believes great products are built by great teams
At its heart, this book delivers a simple but powerful message:
The best cars are not built by machines alone.
They are built by people who care.
Whether you are designing vehicles, leading teams, or building your own career, this book will reshape how you think about engineering, leadership, and excellence.
The best car is not yet built.
But it can be-by you.
