About

Evolution Corp. has a business model based on voluntary euthanasia services. The state has plans to construct an elaborate insurance sector that offers lump sum payments in return for voluntary euthanasia – a negotiated Endate. Policy holders will be chipped for security and must enact their commitment or face legal action (enforced by Evolution Marshals). Thus, a new industry is spurned comprised of specialized medical operatives who aid self-administered suicide and security personnel who enforce contracts. Evolution is ostensibly a private enterprise offering palliative care services. In actuality, it is a public private partnership whose goal is to soften the ground for a policy of mass euthanasia and evolve business processes that efficiently enact the proposed policy. It is at the nexus of a web of powerful social and political players. The Evolution proposition simply asks: would you commit to future Endate for a lump sum now?Nick is desperate for a new job to restart his failing career. He trained as a doctor but got struck off. His life fell apart then but he is getting it back together to support his wife and young daughter. He lands a job as a medical operative with Evolution. It means a second chance at a medical career. He is determined to support his family and regain some professional pride but the shadow of his past lingers and with it a nagging doubt that he can ever be stable or good enough to make it. Even so, he thrives as a middle range manager and is promoted to the head of the Evolution research institute. But Nick becomes traumatized with the work and the business of Evolution. An existential battle unfolds as Nick struggles to find the courage to fight the influence of Evolution. Will he conform, fight or run? Will he play the corporate game for all its rewards or follow his heart (if he still has one)? A diverse web of characters come to play the deadly game that will decide the path of Evolution. This is a story of a doctor's desperate search for new meaning and courage in the face of coordinated actions to encourage commercialized suicide. Some are at the right time and place to make a difference, such as our protagonist, but it's a complex world and it takes something to let go of what the system offers. Prize winning author and scholar trying to make sense of how we want to be and how we can get there through near future scenarios.
