Emma, an upper-class woman in regency England, fancies herself a matchmaker, but her proposed pairings tend to work out better in her head than they do in real life. Her meddling almost costs her all her friends, and her and all her friends their happiness, forcing her to scramble to make things right.

Laced with Austen's trademark wit, and inventive consideration of the state of women in the period, Emma is a classic novel of manners. It has been the subject of many big- and small-screen adaptations, including the much beloved modern take Clueless.
