Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was born on 9 June 1836 in London, the second of eleven children of Newson Garrett and his wife, Louisa née Dunnell. Elizabeth lived a very accomplished life she was both an English physician and feminist, the first Englishwoman to qualify as a physician as well as a surgeon in Britain. She co-founded the first hospital staffed by women, was the first woman M.D. in France, the first woman in Britain to be elected to a school board and, as Mayor of Aldeburgh, the first female mayor and magistrate in Britain. She was undoubtedly a "Women of Renown."
