While taking a walk through snow-covered Vienna in 1913, Dorothea's best friend Anna suddenly vanishes without a trace. Desperate and determined, the fifteen-year-old sets out on her own to search for her friend, navigating all the ups and downs of European history.
After World War I, her search even takes her to Munich. There she witnesses the Beer Hall Putsch and meets Georg Elser, who one day carries out an assassination attempt on the Führer of Germany. Dorothea realizes too late the consequences of her relationship with Georg. Eventually, she moves to the rocket town of Peenemünde as Wernher von Braun's secretary, a place that suddenly no one is allowed to leave.
