First serialized in Collier's Weekly in 1931 under the title The Medicine Girl, "Doctor Sally" tracks the romantic complications of Bill Bannister, an wealthy young man who falls head over heels for Dr. Sally Smith, an American general practitioner and exceptionally talented golfer. Sally is a modern, independent woman who initially dismisses Bill as an idle wastrel.
The primary obstacle to their love is Lottie Higginbotham-a dramatic former actress and serial bride with whom Bill is already entangled. Things descend into classic Wodehouse chaos when Bill's well-meaning friend, Lord "Squiffy" Tidmouth (who happens to be Lottie's first ex-husband), attempts to fix the situation. The mess eventually untangles itself through a string of absurd, laugh-out-loud confrontations at Bill's ancestral estate.
