Ike Jaeger is off to college, earning an engineering degree he may put to use on Planet Valhalla, or building a warp generator small enough to carry on one's person. But he's not going to let classes, studying, or homework distract him from what's most important: football, hot rods, and girls. Coach Stauchel has chosen Ike to be the starting quarterback as part of his strategy to turn the Yosemite Pumas into a winning team. It's a job Ike takes seriously. But when scholarly pursuits fail to interfere with gridiron glory, an accidental detour into a postapocalyptic future might just succeed. There's also Ike's sudden compulsion to fight in World War Two. On top of that, there's an aspiring Hollywood starlet, a clairvoyant young African prophetess, and a Marxist vamp professor all vying for his affection across time and space. Ike's been careful not to tip anyone off that he's a time-traveling fugitive from an alternate reality, but that secret is not as safe as it should be. Paradox is much more than a time-traveling rags-to-riches adventure. It's the epic adventure of a boy who perhaps was never supposed to be presented a chance to strive for greatness...but was anyway. In Defying Fate, that boy is now an adult--but the journey to manhood is far from over.
