All the politicians are dead-stop cheering, this is serious-and the bureaucrats are running the country.
Highrock was a quaint little city-state, the kind of country where the queen runs everything herself and the laws don't have to make sense. Then every head of state in the known world exploded.
Nobody has a clue what's going on, least of all the people in charge. Tax collectors keep getting sucked into horrors beyond comprehension. Dangerous new ideas like 'crop rotation' threaten to tear society apart. An archeological dig keeps accidently building superweapons. It's the Agricultural Revolution and heads will roll.
After Empress Edith (mad sorceress and former child psychopath) solves world peace by killing everyone who disagrees with her, she forces Highrock's surviving paper-pushers to run her evil empire or perish. Divided by a common goal, they're going to make the world a better place no matter how many atrocities it takes.
Civilization depends on five civil servants squabbling over pensions plans and world domination. Can they bring an end to the madness? And do they even want to?
DEATH & TAXES is a bureaucratic horror-comedy novel about good people doing terrible things.
