There are many reasons settlers came west after the Civil War. Jesse Jones came to escape his past but the haunting memory of revenge for a friend's murder stays with him. He now wields the murderer's LeMat pistol. Stationed with the army at Sidney Barracks, Jesse uses his skill with the unusual pistol to guard the railroad from attack by native Cheyenne. After a vicious attack by Union soldiers, Sarah Fitzpatrick plans to become a singer but ends up working as one of Madam Roger's girls. With each encounter, she despairs of ever being free of old memories. After a chance meeting with Jesse, her life takes a turn for the better. Custus Leverette controls Sidney, 'the wickedest town in the west' and no one dares cross him. When he decides he wants Sarah, he'll destroy anyone or anything standing in his way. Who will survive the battle between Custus' bowie knife, the Jesse Jones-The Man with the LeMat?
