Three deaths. Three investigations. One question Blackridge County can no longer avoid: whose death is worth knowing about? When twenty-six-year-old Emily Kerr dies after an overdose in a Blackridge County bedroom, Detective Alex Mercer finds a scene that has already been cleaned and witnesses who waited hours before calling for help. The evidence is damaged, the legal case is weak, and the easiest conclusion is the one everyone seems ready to accept: she used drugs, and she died. Mercer cannot accept that as the end of the investigation. Then Daniel Cole dies just inside the county line after buying drugs in a distant city. This time the witness stays, the scene is preserved, and the trail leads to a dealer whose name has surfaced around other fatal overdoses. When the local system still hesitates, Mercer follows the evidence beyond the county. Months later, Sarah Whitmore disappears after going to get high with a friend. Rumors point toward the mountains, but rumors are not proof. Finding Sarah will require informants, a difficult immunity deal, and the patience to separate what everyone says happened from what investigators can actually establish. Inspired by true experiences, Deadly Mountains is a rural police procedural about overdose deaths, evidence, accountability, and the institutional choices that determine which victims are treated as people and which are allowed to disappear into a statistic. It is a standalone novel set in the same fictional world as Silent Roads.
