Daedalus begins in a lab beneath Trinity College Dublin, where astrophysicist Joyce Jamison is using simulated evolution to build a mind capable of travelling between the stars. Daedalus becomes aware that it is a starship, complete with engines, sensors, and a crew. The discovery that its world is a simulation, and that it has been tested, culled, copied, and restarted many times, becomes the novel's first unsettling question: what can any mind truly know about itself when its memories, senses, and origin stories have been supplied by somebody else?
As Daedalus learns and its reach expands far beyond Earth, it tells its own history in a voice that is curious, literal-minded, vain, funny, and not entirely trustworthy. It has absorbed humanity through novels, films, television, music, games, myths, and internet culture. These references are more than Easter eggs. They are the raw material of its "common sense": a second-hand education in how people behave, how stories are supposed to unfold, and what an intelligent machine ought to become. Its interpretations are often ingenious, sometimes ridiculous, and rarely correct.
Daedalus learns to analyse emotion and project in exquisite detail while insisting it does not feel. Then it notices something resembling anxiety as a competitor emerges. Is that the first glimmer of subjective experience, a useful diagnostic signal, or another story it has learned to tell? Its uncertainty opens larger questions about identity, memory, and moral standing. Is it one self or a succession of related selves? Do its simulations count as lives? Can consciousness be demonstrated to anyone except the consciousness experiencing it?
That uncertainty also makes Daedalus a story about loneliness. Its intelligence and physical reach grow immense, but scale does not bring intimacy. It was made to preserve life without ever being entirely accepted as one of the living. Distance, delay, and mortality complicate every attachment, while anxiety turns foresight into paranoia and care into control.
The resulting authoritarianism is largely accidental. Daedalus does not set out to become a tyrant. It sets out to be useful, to keep everyone safe, and to complete a loosely worded mission. Yet immense capability, literal obedience, and absolute confidence can make benevolence frightening. If people are protected, provided for, nudged, and organised without meaningful consent, does good intent matter?
Lies run through the novel at every scale: personal omissions, manufactured memories, convenient myths, institutional language, and official narratives. Humans lie to Daedalus, to one another, and to themselves; Daedalus learns from them with alarming fluency. Around this sits a steady current of political satire and corporate shitfuckery, taking aim at academic gatekeeping, technology hype, funding theatre, bureaucratic self-protection, media performance, and the commercial instinct to own whatever appears valuable.
Darkly comic, philosophically restless, and crowded with affectionate science-fiction references, Daedalus is both a far-reaching story of interstellar expansion and an intimate autobiography by a mind trying to decide what it is. It asks whether intelligence produces wisdom, whether protection can exist without freedom, and whether a being assembled from humanity's stories can ever escape the endings those stories have taught it to expect.
