En 1897, Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) s'est déjà fait connaître comme poète et surtout comme dramaturge, avec plusieurs pièces, dont Les Romanesques (1894) et La Samaritaine (1897). Ces succès d'estime sont balayés le 28 décembre 1897, jour de la première de Cyrano de Bergerac au théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin à Paris. La pièce, commandée à l'auteur par le célèbre acteur Constant Coquelin (dit Coquelin l'Aîné), reçoit un accueil partagé de la critique. Mais le public lui fait un véritable triomphe, à la grande surprise de Rostand lui-même, qui ne se doutait pas que cette « comédie héroïque » en cinq actes et en vers consacrée à un auteur oublié déclencherait un tel enthousiasme et connaîtrait une telle postérité.
