The story contained within is the true account of David Crockett's life, with minimal embellishment. It is based on thorough research and first-hand sources, including David Crockett's own words as written shortly before his fateful trip to Texas. The author took the Liberty of writing it in the first person; David has more to say in retrospect. The importance and modern relevance of his experience has become more salient; after all, we never really understand our path while we are walking it. David looks back on his life, from the trials and tribulations of youth on the frontier, to accepting the mantle of leadership in the United States Congress, and to meeting his fate at the Alamo. His path intersected with other highly significant historical figures, including Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, and traversed a historical landscape that still shapes the United States today.
Yes, Davy is a legendary pioneer of frontier America, but David was so much more. He was a man battling against the loss of liberty for his fellow pioneers. He was a man pushing back against the injustice of the Indian Removal Act. He was a holdout for independence at the dawn of the two-party system that still divides America. David, ever the consummate storyteller, now gets to tell his own story from his unique, timeless perspective. His tale is intricately woven together with that of the Liberty Bell and all its tolling signified. He now rings the bell again, hoping it will reach a new generation so they, too, can secure the blessings of liberty for themselves and their progeny.
