The sequel to the Newbery Honor-winning novel Paperboy and a Fall 2018 Junior Library Guild selection. Victor Vollmer isn't a paperboy anymore. He's a copyboy now, but his duties at the newspaper get interrupted by a last request from Mr. Spiro, the old man who became Victor's mentor and helped him take on his stutter in the beloved novel Paperboy, a Newbery Honor Book. Victor takes off on a journey that sends him hundreds of miles from home toward the teeth of a gathering storm. Confronted by an unfamiliar and threatening world, he meets a girl who is strong, smart, and bold like no one he's known before, and together they venture to the place where river meets sea. When they wind up racing to evade a hurricane, Victor finds out what the fates have in store for him.
"In this sequel to Paperboy, Victor Vollmer sets off to fulfill a final request of Mr. Spiro, his former mentor who helped him work on his stutter; his task for Mr. Spiro evolves into a grand adventure."
Publishers Weekly, "Noteworthy Middle Grade and YA Sequels for Fall 2018"
"Breaking away. Finding meaning and purpose in life. Coping with uncertainty. Growing up is both a journey and a struggle. It seems appropriate that this personal coming-of-age saga is set during a turbulent historical event. Vawter captures the essence of rite-of-passage in this new chapter in Vic's life."
Reading Style Guide
"The road trip has a Huckleberry Finn-like hue as Victor's travels introduce him to a wide-ranging cast of characters, all of whom have something to teach. Vawter turns a phrase with skill and style; Victor remains a carefully drawn narrator whose preoccupation with his stutter changes and evolves. . . .If the world truly has only two stories-someone goes on a journey and a stranger comes to town-this is a fine mix of both."
