Our Conditions by Irum Iftikhar is a deeply reflective literary novel about identity, expectation, and the quiet emotional battles that shape who we become. Told through the voice of Axis, a child raised under the intense expectations of a perfection-driven mother, the story explores the invisible weight placed on those expected to be extraordinary.
From the earliest moments of his life, Axis is not simply raised - he is crafted, molded into the ideal his mother believes the world demands. Every decision, every movement, and every small imperfection is measured against an impossible standard. As Axis grows, he begins to question the meaning of perfection, the cost of living for someone else's vision, and the quiet strength required to discover one's own identity.
Written with emotional depth and poetic sensitivity, Our Conditions examines the spaces between love and control, silence and expression, and strength and vulnerability. It is a story for readers who appreciate thoughtful, character-driven fiction that explores the complexities of family, expectation, and the search for self.
