What does it take for Latina/x leaders to answer God's call in church systems that were not always built with them in mind?
In Comadre Ministry, Dr. Teresita Matos-Post brings together the powerful stories of Latina/x religious leaders serving in the United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Grounded in Mujerista theology, feminist thought, and lived experience, this book offers a compelling and honest look at the leadership journeys of Latina/x women in ministry across the United States.
Drawing from 14 in-depth interviews, personal reflection, and ethnographic research, Matos-Post explores the real challenges Latina/x leaders face, including identity negotiation, displacement, racism, sexism, and economic inequity. These stories reveal both the cost of leadership and the courage it demands.
But this book is also about strength, wisdom, and faith. Latina/x leaders bring emotional intelligence, resilience, cultural wisdom, and a deep commitment to lifelong learning-gifts that are transforming the church. At the heart of this work is the power of comadrazgo-networks of relationship rooted in trust, care, and shared responsibility. These "comadre" connections nurture, guide, and open doors for others to follow.
Blending theory from Ada María Isasi-Díaz, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Alicia Vargas with lived experience, Comadre Ministry offers both insight and practical guidance for leadership development. It serves as a roadmap for navigating systems that can feel unfamiliar or unwelcoming-and for reshaping them with intention and hope.
Part research, part testimony, and part love letter, this book is a guide for emerging leaders and the institutions that seek to support them. Written with warmth and clarity, it invites readers to listen, learn, and act.
For Latina/x leaders, faith communities, and organizations seeking a more just and inclusive future, Comadre Ministryoffers stories, tools, and vision for building pathways where more leaders can thrive.
Consider this a letter from your titis-offering wisdom, encouragement, and truth con mucho amor.
