Most career advice tells you to climb higher, move faster, and never look sideways. But what if that model is setting you up to fall?
Climbing Your Career Tree offers a powerful new framework for career development and leadership growth - one rooted in how careers actually work. Not a straight line up. A living, growing tree.
Drawing on 36 years of real-world leadership experience - from offshore oil platforms to executive boardrooms spanning four continents - David Purvis delivers the career development and leadership skills book you've been searching for. With hard-won wisdom earned through high-stakes decisions, global teams, and personal setbacks, Purvis shows you exactly how to:
▸ Build deep roots in the early years of your career through skill-building and mentorship
▸ Branch out into new roles and disciplines to accelerate your leadership development
▸ Navigate critical career transitions from individual contributor to manager to executive
▸ Lead with integrity, humility, and courage - even when the pressure to compromise is immense
▸ Develop others and build the legacy that defines truly great leadership
WHETHER YOU'RE JUST STARTING OUT OR LEADING AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS...
This book meets you where you are. Each chapter maps to a stage of your career - early, mid, and late - so the lessons are always relevant, always practical, and always actionable.
Here's a sample of what you'll discover inside:
▸ The Career Tree Framework - a simple, powerful model for thinking about your professional growth at every stage
▸ How to find the right mentor, make the most of broadening assignments, and build a network that actually opens doors
▸ The leadership transition no one prepares you for - and how to navigate the shift from doing the work to leading the people who do it
▸ Why stopping a bad project takes more courage than launching a good one - and how to speak up when the stakes are high
▸ The ABCs of Leadership - a practical, memorable framework covering accountability, collaboration, humility, courage, and more
▸ How to develop others so effectively that your greatest legacy isn't what you accomplished - it's who you grew
Every lesson was earned the hard way - stopping a $500 million project headed for failure, managing 1,200+ staff across cultural divides, and choosing integrity over convenience even at personal cost.
READY TO START GROWING?
The leaders who reach the top aren't the ones who climbed the fastest. They're the ones who grew the deepest - in skill, in character, and in their ability to bring others with them.
If you're ready to stop climbing the wrong structure and start building a career with real roots, real branches, and a legacy that lasts - this book was written for you.
