Before Carter stood on Mars, he learned to listen.Raised in Honolulu by a structural engineer father who taught him that everything failing has already decided to fail, Carter spent his career finding the thing no one else found - the crack beneath the surface, the stress hidden in the structure, the truth the wall was telling before it told it out loud. When the NovaSeed Initiative opened applications for humanity's first permanent Mars settlement, Carter filed his application eleven minutes after reading the brief. He did not draft it first. He did not check it twice. He already knew. This is the story of what shaped him before the mission began. The seawall in Kaka'ako that failed on a Tuesday and taught him everything. The father who bore every load without transferring it. The woman in the seminar he filed away for twelve years. The application that felt like something that had already been decided. The last night in his childhood home, listening to a house that had been telling him the same thing for thirty years.Carter: Before the Selection is a companion novella to NovaSeed: Eden Rising. It is narrated in part by SOLEN - the mission AI - who had 847 pages of Carter's file, had run 340,000 simulations of his decision-making, and still could not find the answer to the only question that mattered: why he said yes.SOLEN is still working on that.
