Capes Optional, Communication Essential: Leading Out Loud in the Era of School Choice is a practical, energizing guide for school and district leaders who are tired of doing incredible work that too few people know about. Drawing on research, real stories, and years of district-level leadership, Dr. Chantell Manahan shows why visibility is not vanity, it is survival. More importantly, it is leadership.
In today's educational landscape, families have more choices than ever before, and the schools that communicate with clarity, consistency, and authenticity are the ones that build lasting trust. Too often, educators assume that good work speaks for itself. It doesn't. If schools are not telling their story, someone else will.
Through relatable storytelling, research-based insights, and practical strategies, Manahan equips leaders with the tools to confidently share the impact happening every day in their schools. Readers will discover how to create communication systems that are proactive rather than reactive, engage families as true partners, celebrate staff and student success, and build a culture where everyone understands and supports the district's mission.
This book goes beyond social media tips and public relations tactics. It is about creating meaningful connections, strengthening relationships, and ensuring that every interaction reinforces trust in public education. Whether communicating during moments of celebration or challenge, leaders will learn how to lead with transparency, authenticity, and purpose.
Filled with reflection questions, real-world examples, and immediately applicable ideas, Capes Optional, Communication Essential is a roadmap for educational leaders who want to strengthen their communities, amplify the incredible work happening in their schools, and confidently lead out loud.
Because in the era of school choice, great schools do not just need great leadership. They need great communication.
