Drake Haynes is a veteran reporter for The Hollywood Daily Drum. In his younger days, he was a bit of a star, but life has taken him down a notch or two or three. His marriage went kablooey and he still pines for his former wife. He's had two heart attacks and quintuple bypass surgery. And he drinks too much. Way too much. A younger generation of reporters have taken over the newsroom, and he's been relegated to writing an advice-to-the-lovelorn column. But he still has the itch to do real reporting, and when a schoolteacher is murdered under mysterious circumstances in Culver City, he talks his editor into giving him a crack at the story. And so begins a twisty Hollywood murder mystery that will take Drake into a dark labyrinth of lies and danger and will require him to muster up all the strength and courage he thought he had lost to avoid becoming a murder victim himself.
