Biblical Restorative Justice: Healing, Reconciliation, and the Heart of God
What if justice could heal rather than harm? What if the response to wrongdoing focused on repairing broken relationships rather than simply punishing offenders? What if victims had a voice, offenders took genuine responsibility, and communities became agents of restoration?
In Biblical Restorative Justice: Healing, Reconciliation, and the Heart of God, Dr. Maxwell Shimba offers a comprehensive exploration of a transformative approach to justice that is rooted in the deepest teachings of Scripture and confirmed by decades of research and practice. This groundbreaking work invites readers to reimagine justice through the lens of God's restorative character, revealing that the heart of God beats with compassion for both victims and offenders, and that true justice is measured not by the pain it inflicts but by the healing it achieves.
Drawing on extensive biblical scholarship, psychological insight, philosophical reflection, and legal analysis, Dr. Shimba constructs a compelling case for restorative justice as the faithful expression of God's covenant relationship with humanity. The book examines the foundational concepts of shalom and covenant, demonstrating that biblical justice is not primarily about retribution but about restoring right relationship between God, individuals, and communities.
Readers will journey through the experiences of victims and offenders, understanding the profound psychological impact of crime and the deep needs that conventional justice systems consistently fail to address. They will discover how restorative practices such as victim-offender mediation, family group conferencing, and circle processes create opportunities for genuine healing, accountability, and transformation.
The book explores the contrast between retributive and restorative paradigms, showing how the retributive model that dominates modern legal systems often compounds harm rather than repairing it. Through careful examination of biblical texts, historical developments, and contemporary research, Dr. Shimba demonstrates that restorative justice is not merely a program or technique but a fundamental paradigm shift in how we understand and respond to wrongdoing.
Key themes include:
• The nature and needs of victims, and how restorative justice restores voice, agency, and dignity
• The complexity of offenders, their wounds and potential for transformation through genuine accountability
