About

While walking through New Wortley on the outskirts of Leeds, I came across a cemetery in a state of profound neglect. The grass stood waist-high, and many of the gravestones were either damaged beyond repair or rendered unreadable by time. As I moved slowly through the grounds, I was struck by a deep sense of despair. That feeling intensified when I encountered an unmarked mound of earth-no headstone, no name-only a small grave marker bearing the number 2266. I stood there for some time, wondering whether it might still be possible to discover who lay beneath and, if so, to tell their story so it would not be lost entirely.

That moment became the beginning of a fifteen-year journey. Through painstaking research-trawling birth, marriage, and death certificates; visiting villages; and examining census records and historical newspaper articles-I uncovered the identity behind grave 2266. The man was Henry Saddington, born in 1827, more than one hundredmiles south of Wortley, in the small village of Market Overton.

Henry's life was marked by repeated tragedy, yet he faced each hardship with a strength, fortitude, and resilience that feels increasingly rare today. This book tells his remarkable story. It concludes with a simplebut unsettling questionfor the reader: who will remember you, and who will tell your story?
