Before One God: The Ancient Gods Behind the Biblical Tradition is a sharp, accessible examination of the historical and literary origins of modern monotheism. Blending personal reflection with comparative mythology and biblical scholarship, the book traces how the God of the Bible was gradually assembled across centuries by real human editors borrowing heavily from older Near Eastern, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman traditions.
Beginning with a line-by-line breakdown of creation narratives in Genesis, author ROB CLIFF LOWE unpacks how early Israelite faith evolved from polytheistic and henotheistic roots, specifically the divine council and the historic merging of Canaanite gods El and Yahweh, into strict monotheism. The text walks readers through critical historical mismatches, including the literary construction of patriarchs like Abraham, the recycling of Mesopotamian flood legends such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, and the multi-century "telephone game" of manuscript copying, translation choices, and canonical editing. Finally, the book demonstrates how empires and monarchs from Cyrus the Great and Constantine to Henry VIII weaponized these tailored religious myths to consolidate political control, urging readers to recognize their own critical thinking as an intellectual asset rather than a spiritual failure.
