It started with a fall. Now everyone's looking at you-and the clock is running.
Most families don't plan for eldercare or senior living decisions. They react to them-a fall, a hospital discharge, a call from a neighbor on a Tuesday. Suddenly you have a week to make a decision you know nothing about, for a parent who may not want to make it.
This is one of the most important decisions you will ever make, and it does not come with a handbook. Until now.
Avoiding the Chandelier Effect is your decision framework-whether you're facing an urgent call today or planning for aging parents a year ahead. The "chandelier effect" is what the industry uses on you: a gleaming entryway, a polished tour, a coordinator who returns your call within an hour. Carla shows you what's underneath-staffing ratios, contract terms that shift after you sign, and the difference between a community that will care for your parent through decline and one that will move her out when her needs grow.
Inside, you'll learn:
• How to assess readiness before the crisis-the ten areas that determine whether someone should stay home or move
• How to compare independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care communities-honestly, without falling for the lobby
• How to read a senior living contract-the clauses that matter, the ones that shift, the ones that are non-negotiable
• How to navigate Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits, and private pay-an elder law guide from someone who has practiced both sides
• What to expect in the first ninety days-and how to know whether you made the right call
• How to change again if the community isn't working out
Carla Mitchell has answered these questions from every side: the elder law attorney who built the estate plans and reviewed the contracts, the executive who ran the communities, the AARP advocate who fought for seniors, and the hospice volunteer who sat with patients and their families. She built this decision system from all of it.
For readers who want the operator's perspective missing from most caring for aging parents guides-and a framework, not a reference. Avoiding the Chandelier Effect won't merely help you make one decision. It will help you make the right decision, or make the decision right.
Read it before you need it. If you already need it, start now.
