About

Put your hands on the wound. Don't let go.

Whittier, Minneapolis. In the summer of 2020 the city burns, and a neighborhood learns what it can do for itself when no one is coming. Five years later the federal government arrives in force. People start disappearing from porches and parking lots, and the same few blocks have to remember everything they learned and invent the rest.

Apply Direct Pressure is a fictionalized, ground-level story of real history, still unfolding. Revi runs a field kitchen out of a basement and a borrowed portable stove. Nikki has been stopping bleeding on Lake Street since before anyone had a name for it. Around them a network forms: couriers, radios, porch lamps, whistles, and Dolores Reyes, seventy-nine, who knows which doors will open. Nothing they build is armed. All of it holds.

This is a novel. It is also a manual: how to stay strong with almost nothing, and why "each other" is not a consolation but a strategy. The instruction on the cover is the one a medic gives you when the kit is empty. Apply direct pressure. Wait for help. Be the help while you wait.

Illustrated by Joe Groove. Published by Direct Press, Minneapolis.
