Set in Depression era Texas, pulp writer Bob pounds out barbarian yarns, sports columns, and weird tales on a secondhand typewriter. He does not want charity and has no patience for literary snobs, using his writing to survive. When Angus Armstrong arrives at the bookstore of the college Bob attends, he pays in cash for Bob's signature, and his generosity escalates to the point that he pays bills Bob never asked him to. Bob's pride rebels, but Angus's patronage keeps him afloat until his work finally sells, though he has to negotiate boundaries to keep his dignity. This is a story for anyone who fights to make art without selling their soul and for devoted fans who want to assist their favorite artists without crushing them. Cathy Smith is a Mohawk writer who lives on a Status Reservation on the Canadian Side of the Border on Turtle Island (North America).
