A Transformative Vision for Economic Justice
In An Introduction to Islamic Economics, Dr. Muhammad Akram Khan presents a comprehensive alternative to the economic systems that have shaped-and troubled-the modern world. At a time when conventional economics struggles with persistent crises of unemployment, inequality, and environmental degradation, this groundbreaking work offers substantive solutions grounded in timeless moral principles and genuine concern for human welfare.
Unlike conventional economics that treats humans as mere utility-maximizing consumers, Islamic economics envisions people as moral agents pursuing balanced prosperity within ethical boundaries. The organizing principle is falāḥ-a multi-dimensional concept encompassing spiritual development, material well-being, social harmony, and moral excellence. This framework transforms economics from a value-neutral technocracy into a moral enterprise serving comprehensive human flourishing.
Core Principles with Contemporary Applications
Dr. Khan systematically examines distinctive Islamic economic features with immediate relevance to modern challenges:
The prohibition of interest (ribā) is analyzed as addressing unemployment's structural cause. Interest creates artificial barriers to investment, excluding marginally productive projects and leaving human and physical resources idle. Islamic profit-sharing mechanisms align incentives, distribute risks equitably, and channel finance toward genuinely productive activities rather than speculative gain.
The zakāh system of obligatory alms functions as both spiritual purification and systematic redistribution, preventing wealth concentration while providing social safety nets without creating dependency or requiring debt-financed government programs.
Ethical consumption and production guidelines balance individual freedom with social responsibility, rejecting both asceticism and consumerism in favor of sustainable material engagement that serves genuine needs rather than manufactured wants.
The development philosophy prioritizes comprehensive human welfare over GDP growth, emphasizing basic needs fulfillment, local resource utilization, environmental stewardship, and spiritual development alongside material prosperity.
Rigorous Yet Accessible
Written for both general readers and professional economists, this introduction maintains scholarly rigor while employing clear, accessible language. Dr. Khan draws extensively from the Qurʾān, Sunnah, and classical Islamic jurisprudence, demonstrating how these foundational sources provide practical solutions to contemporary economic challenges including stagflation, unsustainable development, international debt, and systemic financial instability.
Endorsed by Leading Authority
Professor Khurshid Ahmad, internationally recognized scholar-statesman, provides the foreword, praising the work's "simplicity, directness of style, unapologetic approach, and reliance on original sources." This endorsement positions the work within the mature development of Islamic economics as an academic discipline.
A Vision Beyond Materialism
An Introduction to Islamic Economics ultimately presents a vision of economic life organized around cooperation, justice, and genuine human dignity rather than exploitation, accumulation, and materialistic individualism-offering hope for transcending the failures of conventional economic thought.
